Third Call For Papers:
Competing Diversities: Traditional Sexualities and Modern Western Sexual
Identity Constructions Mexico City, 1 - 5 June 2005
The deadline for paper proposals for "Competing Diversities" to be held
in Mexico City from June 1 - 5, 2005 has been extended. The new
submission deadline for paper proposals is *Friday, February 25, 2005*.
In many cultures throughout the world, traditional sexualities and
alternative sexual identities are disappearing or transforming as a
result of the diffusion of modern western sexual identity constructions
and the emergence of global gay and lesbian subcultures modeled on North
American and European cultural models. It can be argued that a queer
globalization has taken place. The conference "Competing Diversities"
seeks to examine issues related to the interaction and confrontation
between traditional sexualities and western sexual identity
constructions across a wide range of perspectives.
This is the first conference with such a focus in Mexico and the
conference forms part of the Diversity and Dialogue conference circle
organized by Enkidu Magazine in Mexico City in cooperation with ADETEA,
the Association for Anthropology Students at the Autonomous University
of the State of Mexico in Toluca.
Papers are welcomed on virtually all related topics and themes,
independently of time, period and space, as well as interdisciplinary
perspectives. Also papers of comparative phenomena are welcome. Possible
themes and topics might include:
* Colonisation of the body and the mind
* Representations of indigenous sexualities in colonial and post
colonial discourse
* Historical representations of alternative sexualities
* The historiography of homosexualities and sexual identity formations
* Enslavement of bodies and voices
* Sexualitities in transition
* The role of culture in sexual identity formations.
Wide and diverse interpretations of the conference themes are encouraged.
