Call for Papers: Theorising the Politics of Contemporary Culture Panel
at the ECPR General Conference, Budapest, 8-10 September 2005-02-11

Theorising the Politics of Contemporary Culture
Chair: Marina Prentoulis (University of Essex)

In an attempt to theorize the politics of contemporary culture, we
invite a dialogue across disciplinary boundaries, which attempts to
dispel the common conception of culture as an additional 'dimension' to
politics and economics. Cultural expression in itself, allows as to
develop and rework the framework of contemporary politics and political
theory.

This panel examines the politics of different aspects of contemporary
culture, such as architecture, film, literature, clothing. The aim of
the panel is to see (1) how divisions within the political realm are
reflected in the cultural realm. (2) how culture is itself a matter of
political contestation, in particular in terms of what culture means and
should mean.(3) How cultural and political theory can work together in
order to develop a new framework for contemporary politics and
democratic theory.
