On March 31 - April 1, 2005, the Department of Foreign Languages and
Literatures is organizing its third conference at James Madison
University. This conference will bring together scholars/researchers
from a variety of disciplines to address the universal theme of freedom
for which humanity, since the beginning of time, has fought and died in
order to assure its survival and sources.
We are inviting faculty, students, and independent scholars and
researchers in fields such as English and foreign literatures, history,
art history, all sciences, philosophy and religion, music, theater and
dance, political science, psychology, sociology and others, to submit
abstract/proposals and convene panel discussions and/or workshops. We
also incourage participants to organize and chair sessions.
The deadline for submitting proposals of max 300 words, is *March 6,

We are pleased to announce the Second International Conference of
Digital Communication will be held at National Chung-Cheng University,
Chia-Yi, Taiwan,
25-26 November 2005.
Rethinking digital technologies and development
Although the "Development Communication Theory" faded out eventually in
the 1970s, this theoretical vision seems to revive in the digital
age--it has influenced, directly or indirectly, the promotion and
implementation of the National Information Infrastructure policy in many
countries. However, researchers from the critical camp have pointed out
the deficiency of the NII/GII policy and started to examine the emerging
problems of inequality in the information society. Moreover, the notion
of "modernization" which the Development Communication Theory is based
on is problematic. Instead of the traditional argument that privileges
the linear model of one-dimensional development in modernization,
diverse aspects of "development" should be highlighted. The agenda of
our conference will focus on various issues on the relationships between
digital technologies and national/social/cultural/individual development.
This conference welcomes papers focusing on, but not limited to, the
following five research topics:
1. Digital technologies and national/social development:
including international/domestic digital divide, digitalization
policy, digital democracy, and the like.
2. Digital technologies and economic/industrial development:
including economic development and digital technologies, digital
industries, digital content, advertising/marketing and digital
technologies, workers and digital technologies, consumption and
digital technologies, and the like.
3. Digital technologies and community development:
including community integration and digital technologies, rural
development and digital technologies, virtual community, and the
like.
4. Digital technologies and cultural development:
including global/local culture and digital technologies, cultural
diversity and digital technologies, minorities and digital
technologies, and the like.
5. Digital technologies and the development of subjectivity:
including personal uses of digital technologies, gender and
digital technologies, digital technologies and empowerment, and
the like.

Background
The First World Culturelink Conference on Dynamics of Communication and =
Cultural Change: The Role of Networks was held in Zagreb, Croatia, on =
8-11 June 1995. Over one hundred cultural researchers and professionals =
and fifteen international organizations from all continents gathered for =
the conference, in spite of the wartime conditions in Croatia at the =
time. Since the First World Conference, the Culturelink Network has =
grown substantially, having developed further research activities, data =
bases and publishing activities, and having held a number of significant =
conferences (on e-culture, transitional processes, Mediterranean =
cooperation, etc.).
Ten years later, the Second World Culturelink Conference is organized =
with the aim to examine different aspects of new ways and actors of =
global communication and dialogue among cultures in the 21st century.
Ours is a time of ever faster changes, and we live in societies which =
are, or are increasingly becoming, multicultural and ready to =
participate in open and dynamic intercultural communication. The =
recognition of differences between cultures as the key constituent of =
their identity stimulates dialogue and cooperation. In a globalized =
world the full affirmation of multiculturalism/interculturalism is a =
challenge that requires new efforts in international cultural =
cooperation and intercultural competence. The benefits of globalization =
must be shared more equitably by people and by cultures, and must have =
an inclusive/networking effect. Innovative ways to promote intercultural =
dialogue and communication need to be examined.
The Second World Culturelink Conference is part of Culturelink Network's =
efforts to promote cooperation and dialogue among cultures, in line with =
the Global Agenda for Dialogue among Civilizations adopted by the United =
Nations in 2001.
Objectives
The Second World Culturelink Conference is organized with the principal =
objective to search for and analyse new ways, new instruments and new =
actors in cultural communication, and research the role of networks in =
creating and strengthening a global context for sustainable development =
and dialogue among cultures.
The second objective is to discuss the new public cultural policies, and =
particularly their role in creating partnerships among public sectors =
and civil society. Public policy, developed in partnership with civil =
society and the private sector, is of vital importance to ensuring =
democratic access to the means of cultural communication. Investing in =
public cultural policy research is becoming a sine qua non of global =
cultural development.
The conference also aims to examine aspects of international mobility, =
primarily based on networking and information exchange. New actors (e.g. =
regions, local communities) have appeared in this area. The networking =
of heterogeneous actors offers a multiplicity of new types and areas of =
cooperation and initiatives in the globalized world.
Within such a framework, it is central to redefine the role of all =
actors, including states and national cultures, as well as local =
communities, civil society, professional organisations and individuals =
participating in the processes of globalization. The transformation =
processes initiated by globalization have brought to the fore the =
establishment of new cultural identities, particularly presented through =
virtual communication technologies. Cultures appear to be both actors =
and mediators of these changes.

The conference is expected to bring to Zagreb cultural researchers and =
professionals dealing with processes of cultural communication, with =
cultural policy and cultural development. As they will be coming from =
different continents and many different cultural backgrounds, this =

Twenty-Seventh Annual North American Labor History Conference
Wayne State University, October 20-22, 2005
The Program Committee of the North American Labor History Conference =
invites proposals for sessions and papers on "Labor, Solidarity and =
Organizations" for our twenty- seventh annual meeting. 2005 marks =
several milestones in labor history, most notably the centenary of the =
founding of the Industrial Workers of the World. In addition, 2005 is =
the one-hundredth anniversary of the 1905 Russian Revolution and the =
sixtieth anniversary of the end of World War II. All of these
events represent milestones for labor movements and organizations that =
strongly shaped modern working-class experiences. In order to mark these =
events, the North American Labor History Conference invites papers that =
will explore the history, impact and meaning of these events - the =
founding of the IWW, the 1905 Revolution and the ending of WWII - as =
well as the broader process of unionization and organization.
The program committee encourages comparative and interdisciplinary =
scholarship from a range of national and international contexts, the =
integration of public historians and community and labor activists into =
conference sessions, and the use of differing session formats =
(workshops, roundtable discussions, and multimedia as well as =
traditional panels). It encourages sessions that address the theme from =
perspectives of gender, race, ethnicity, and sexuality.
Please submit panel and paper proposals (including a 1-2 page abstracts =
and brief vitas or biographical statements for all participants) by =
March 15th, 2005, to:
