Turkey's Engagement with Global Women's Human Rights
=20
Ashgate Publishers (www.ashgate.com)
Series: Gender in a Global/Local World

Examining the rise of global women's human rights and their =
interpretation and applicatino to Turkey, this book provides an in-depth =
study that applies global norms -including women's empowerment, =
overcoming violence against women, and gender and good governance - to a =
specific locale in order to examine events post application. The volume =
examines whether a gender equality regime exists and looks into Turkey's =
attempt at
compliance. Moreover, it analyzes the tension between abstract =
universalism, Western enlightenment values and local values and =
identities, including the role of Islam regarding women's rights.

This groundbreaking study also includes research on the Women's =
movements in Turkey, their discourses and relationships with the state =
from the
1980s onwards, during which time multilateral and bilateral donors, and =
the EU exerted their influence, and new partnerships were formed with =
the
state. The book is suitable for a variety of audiences interested in =
human rights, gender and the relationship between democracy and Islam.

According to Prof. Yakin Erturk (Professor at Middle East Technical =
University and UN Special Rapporteur on Violence against Women):
"This exciting book demonstrates how women's activism, engaging with =
international gender equality regimes, can engender the public discourse
in a country with a strong patriarchal traidtion. With this =
contribution, Kardam provides an insightful account of the interplay =
betgween state,
civil soceityand international actors in the construction of universal =
human rights norms and their domestic application. Students of Turkish =
as
well as gender studies will find the book an enriching experience."
