Conference Announcement and First Call for Papers for the International =
Conference of the Ottoman - Russian War of 1877-78
We are pleased to announce that the International Conference of the =
Ottoman - Russian War of 1877-78, organized by Middle East Technical=20
University and Meiji University, will be held in Ankara in December 13 =
-14, 2005.
The Organising Committee consists of Prof. Dr. Se=E7il Karal Akg=FCn =
(Chairperson of History Department, METU), Prof. Dr. Sahara Tetuya =
(Meiji University), Prof. Dr. Ilber Ortayli (Director of Topkapi =
Museum), Prof. Dr. Evgene Radusev (Bilkent), and Assoc. Prof. Dr. =D6mer =
Turan (METU).
The aim of the conference is to gather the experts on the 19th century =
Ottoman - Russian relations and especially on the Ottoman - Russian War =
of 1877-78, and to have overall evaluation of this war. Many actual =
problems of the Near East, especially of the Balkans and Caucasus have =
strong ties with the abovementioned War. As a result of this war, five =
independent and autonomous states were established in the Balkans. =
Another consequences of the war was transition of the administration of =
Bosnia and Cyprus to Austria and England, and the rise of Armenian =
question for the first time in the international diplomatic arena, etc.
Themes include but are not limited to:
-Introducing Turkish, Russian, British etc. archives,
-Evaluating the Turkish, Russian, Bulgarian, British etc. literature on =
the war,
-Military history of the war in the Balkan and Caucasus fronts,
-Some scenes of the war, for instance Pleven,
-Some persons of the war, for instance Gazi Osman Pasha,
-International power balance in the Near East before and after the war,
-Diplomatic aspects of the war; Istanbul Conference, Berlin Conference, =
St Stefano Treaty, Berlin Treaty,
-Political, economical changes in the Near East,
-Demographical results of the war, Population movements and migration,
-The Ottoman-Russian War of 1877-78 in art.
The language of the symposium, papers and discussions, etc. will be =
English. All expenses of the participants (food & accommodation) in =
Ankara, will be covered by the organizers. A limited number of travel =
grants are available for the paper presenters. Proposals must include =
names, affiliations, a short CV and an abstract (up to 500 words) =
emphasizing the topic, the sources, the methods and possible results. =
The applications should be submitted via email to omert@metu.edu.tr by =
August 31th, 2005.
