European security and the media

Call for papers for BISA conference, St Andrews, 19-21 December 2005. =
(For more details on the conference, please check =
http://www.bisa.ac.uk/confs/BISAconf2005/2005call.htm.)

Apologies for the lateness of this call for papers. I would like to put =
together two linked panels for the upcoming BISA conference on European =
security and the media. Because I am working on an ESRC project entitled =
'Securitizing terrorism in Europe: Representing Islam and North Africa =
in European policy and the media,' papers dealing with Islam, European =
Muslim communities, and North African Muslim communities are =
particularly welcome. However, I would welcome papers covering a wide =
range of topics dealing with security and the media, including but not =
limited to

** The theoretical relationship between media and security studies

** The role of the media in the securitization of threats

** European media representations of security threats

** Non-European media representations of European security threats

** The implication of media representations for perceptions of European =
security threats (that is, audience reception)

Panel proposals need to be submitted to BISA by 2 May at the latest. =
Therefore, if you are interested in presenting a paper - or indeed in =
acting as discussant or panel chair -- please contact Jutta Weldes =
(University of Bristol, Politics) as soon as possible - ideally by =
Thursday, 28 May -- at jutta.weldes@bris.ac.uk. I can, however, accept =
proposals through early Monday, 2 May.

Please send your name, a provisional paper title, and complete contact =
information, including email addresses, as this information is required =
by BISA. BISA also needs to know whether or not you are a BISA member. =
(There is a surcharge on the conference fee for non-BISA members, so it =
might make sense to join if you are not.)

Many thanks for considering this late request on such short notice.

Sincerely,

Jutta Weldes
