Turkey and Greece: Transcending the Past and Embracing the Future
This is the continuation of a long-term bilateral cooperation between =
two prominent academic institutions on the two sides of the Aegean that =
aims at addressing major issues of interest for foreign policy experts =
and academics of both countries.=20
Following years of independent organisations, this year, the two =
institutions are jointly hosting a Summer Seminar concentrating on the =
topical issue of=20
"The EU, Turkey and Greece: Perceptions on the Middle East".
The purpose of the seminar is to examine the main geopolitical =
challenges facing the Middle East today as well as Turkey's and Greece's =
role within this context. The seminar will also include a discussion on =
US policy towards the Middle East and major security and geopolitical =
challenges, such as Iraq, The Arab-Israeli conflict, and Gulf security =
issues. Special attention will be given to the European perspective =
regarding the Middle East and transatlantic relations under this prism. =
The seminar will also examine the role of Greece in the Middle East and =
the perspectives of Greek-Turkish relations.=20
Objectives
The Summer Programme series is designed to provide a framework for =
understanding the social, political, economic and cultural realities and =
developments on both sides of the Aegean. Prospective participants are =
expected to enroll in the Programme in order to develop a critical =
approach to the prevailing stereotypes which have existed between Greece =
and Turkey for more than a century. Following the Programme, =
participants will not only acquire specific knowledge with regard to =
Greece and Turkey, but will also improve their sensitivity concerning =
the region in general.
The Programme takes the form of a series of lectures by experts in the =
field of Turkish and Greek studies. In addition, a cultural programme is =
put together to enhance the participants' understanding of historical =
realities by utilizing =DDstanbul and the island of Hydra as historical =
settings which kept the two peoples together for centuries, and later =
apart. =DDstanbul has always been, and still is today, a bridge between =
Europe and Asia. Historically and culturally cosmopolitan by nature, it =
has been the capital city of two great civilisations and empires. Today =
it is one of the most vibrant cities in Europe and still holds a unique =
place between East and West.
In addition to the lectures given at =DDstanbul Bilgi University campus =
and on the island of Hydra, the Summer Programme contains workshops on =
fields of possible cooperation between Greece and Turkey, such as NGOs =
cooperation vis-=E0-vis peace building.=20
The topics of this year's seminar include:
a.. 'The EU, NATO and Eastern Mediterranean Security'=20
a.. 'A Strategy for the Eastern Mediterranean: Greece, Turkey, and the =
EU as Architects for a Middle Eastern Peace'=20
a.. 'Religion and Democracy in the Middle East'=20
a.. 'Greece, Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean Security'=20
a.. 'EU Enlargement Democracy and Islam'=20
a.. 'Geostrategic Impact of Turkey's EU Path for Lasting Solutions in =
Middle Eastern Issues'=20
a.. 'Northern Iraq: Its Prospects and Impact on Turkish - EU Relations'=20
a.. 'Turkish Foreign Policy and Security in the Eastern Mediterranean'=20
a.. 'US and European Policy Differences in the Middle East'=20
a.. 'War in Iraq and Turkish Perceptions towards the Middle East'=20
a.. 'Water as a Future Source of Conflict in the Middle East'=20
Extracurricular activities
Students will have the opportunity to enjoy the rich historical and =
cultural atmosphere of =DDstanbul and Hydra by participating in cultural =
events and excursions organised by the two Universities. For example, =
=DDstanbul Bilgi University will organise a full-day excursion in =
historic =DDstanbul and Beyo=F0lu/Pera. Participants will have the =
opportunity to visit, among other sites, the magnificent architectural =
structure Saint Sophia, the house of the Ottoman Sultans, Topkap=FD =
Palace, Byzantine monuments and prominent historical mosques and =
churches in the district of Sultanahmet. Afterwards, the heart of the =
city, Beyo=F0lu, the old Pera, which truly reflects the cultural =
diversity of =DDstanbul will be explored. Beyo=F0lu is yet another =
microcosm of Western-Oriental fusion typical to =DDstanbul. Furthermore, =
participants will have free time for sightseeing on their own and will =
be offered advice on sites that can be visited or activities that can be =
pursued.=20
Accommodation
Students will be accommodated in student lodgings in double and triple =
rooms.=20
Costs and scholarships
