THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT AUSTIN  invites applications
for a tenure-track position in Islamic Studies at the rank of
Assistant Professor, to begin September 1, 2005, contingent upon
availability of funding. Candidates should have completed their PhD
by the appointment date in Islamic Studies, Middle Eastern Studies,
Religious Studies, or a related discipline.

The Islamic Studies program at the University of Texas at Austin is
housed in the Department of Middle Eastern Studies but includes faculty
from several other departments and disciplines with a focus outside
the region. While the successful candidate need not be limited to
the Middle East in his/her research, the committee seeks applicants
with a demonstrated research trajectory that relates to the region.
Preference will be given to candidates who conduct research on
the classical Islamic tradition. The successful candidate will be
expected to teach core courses at the graduate and undergraduate
levels on Islamic religion, including such topics as scriptural
traditions, theology, jurisprudence, and popular piety. Applicants
should submit a letter of interest, curriculum vitae, sample of
research, teaching materials and evaluations, and three letters
of reference to:
