CFP: Literary Belief and Non-Belief (grad) (11/15/04; 2/18/05-2/19/05)
------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Fordham Graduate English Association Conference, 18-19 February 2005
'Fools by heavenly compulsion': Literary Depictions of Belief and Non-Belief
This conference, intended to appeal to participants in fields across the
humanities, will address literary representations of faith--Eastern and
Western, traditional and non-traditional--and its adherents, as well as
representations of non-belief and non-believers. Paper topics will not be
limited to English-language or traditional "literary" texts; rather, we
hope
to have a program featuring scholars working in theology, history and
philosophy, as well as literature. Tentative panel topics include:
Literature of/and the Protestant Reformation; Crises of Faith/ Conversions;
Medieval Mystics; Faith, Catholicism, and the Celtic Twilight; Eastern
Religions in Post-Colonial and/or Western Texts; Blasphemy and the Gothic;
The Logos/Word Made Flesh; Deism and the New Science; True and False
Prophets:; Religion and Popular Culture. This list will of course change as
the conference nears, but this gives an idea of the broad range of
submissions we will consider. Calls for papers for specific panels will be
going out in the next couple of months.
The conference will take place at Fordham University's Lincoln Center
Campus
in Manhattan on Feb. 18-19, 2005.
