Acacia Group=92s 2005 Conference: Culture, Context and Connections
Acacia Group of California State University Fullerton is seeking papers
for our 2005 conference.
Returning the Gaze
Objectified, those under the gaze imbedded in many forms of cultural
production such as film, visual and plastic arts, and literature may
manifest ways of returning the gaze. Reflecting back (cross-dressing),
becoming invisible (assimilation, passing), translation and
appropriation (identity and pride movements), and confrontation and
reversal (parody, critique, protest) are some of the ways that
objectified people return the gaze. Papers may examine these or other
forms of returning the gaze, interrogate the balance of power in such
situations, and consider the implications of such gazes and their respons=
es.
