Contributions are invited for a special issue of the Journal Of American Studies of Turkey (JAST) on `American Dreams`.
The American Dream is a familiar phrase, but what does it mean? Whose dream is it? Is there just one dream for all Americans? How has it evolved over time? In this special issue, essays are sought which look at the meaning of the “American Dream”? Is it something that depends on the belief that success, fame and wealth can be achieved through thrift and hard work, or is it dependent on the philosophy of “get rich quick”? To what extent has the idea served to shape the culture and the literature of the United States? And does it still have relevance to contemporary America, in a culture where many people believe that the only passports to riches are large-prize television game shows, big-jackpot-state lotteries and compensation lawsuits?
We are looking for contributions that focus on the following subject areas:-
i) The American Dream in the past -- origins of the American Dream in politics, literature and popular cultures & its significance for America's development as a nation.
ii) Reconstructions of the American Dream in various texts - movies, political discourse, religious discourse, religious polemics, pamphlets, newspapers, etc.
iii) Definitions of the American Dream - both inside the country and outside. We are especially interested in contemporary constructions of this definition.
iv) Futures of the American Dream -- can it survive and in what form? What interest groups might be specifically interested in appropriating the American Dream and for what purposes?
What kind of material are we looking for?
- historical surveys of the idea of the American Dream
- critical analyses of specific texts concerned with the American Dream. These may be literary, cinematic, political, media, cybertexts as well as other texts.
- analyses of the term itself and its socio-political implications both for America and other countries in the world
- oral his/herstories of the meaning of the American Dream for specific communities and/or interest groups.
We are interested in full-length essays (3000-5000 words), but we also welcome shorter `think-pieces' or polemics and book reviews.
All submissions will be peer reviewed.
Deadline: 1st March 2005.
All enquiries to Dr. Laurence Raw (l_rawjalaurence@yahoo.com). Postal address Faculty of Science and Letters, Baskent University, Baglica Kampusu, Eskisehir Yolu 20 km. Ankara 06530 TURKEY
