CALL FOR PAPERS
Boundaries of Literature:
Examining Literature in an Interdisciplinary Setting

Open to graduate students

English Graduate Student Association Conference
Baylor University
Waco, Texas
April 1-2

We welcome proposals for papers on interdisciplinary topics.

In response to the current trend of interdisciplinary studies, the
Baylor English Graduate Student Conference will examine the intersection
of literary studies and other academic disciplines. Besides accepting
papers on general interdisciplinary topics, we seek to discuss the
extent that interdisciplinary studies are valuable and the manner that
each discipline should remain distinct from the others.

We pose a number of questions. What is literature? How do we classify
literary texts? Is there a unity of knowledge, and even if such unity is
present, will political concerns influence any exchange between
literature and other disciplines? Have we lost a context for literary
studies? How do interdisciplinary studies maintain academic integrity?

What are effective scholarly methods for integrating the academic
disciplines? Should a different set of questions be asked? The
conference will consider the relationships and boundaries between
English and other academic disciplines such as creative writing and
studies in the liberal arts that may be closely related to literature.
In addition, the conference will examine literature's boundaries with
disciplines such as the natural sciences and law that may be less
obviously connected.

Proposals examining the boundary of literature and all disciplines are
encouraged. Any paper, however, that combines elements from two or more
disciplines are welcome. Possible intersections may include but are not
limited to literature and the following fields and topics:

Rhetoric/Composition
Philosophy/Ethics
Science
Music/Art
Religion
Politics
Gender/Sexuality
History
Law

We anticipate panel discussions exploring the place of literature in the
academy.

To be considered, proposals must contain a title and a one-page, double-
spaced abstract. Also include your name, e-mail address, mailing
address, and a brief biography.

Electronic submissions are welcome. Send proposals or inquiries to the
