in /corp/ orate:
1. to embody. 2. to put into or include in the body or
substance. 3. to give bodily shape to, as in the
performance of choreographies or performative
theories. 4. to absorb, as in to appropriate cultural
practices. 5. to mix or blend together, as in
techno-bodies. 6. to unite in one body, as in to form
a coalition to protect abstract values such as liberty
or democracy, or as in building empire. 7. to combine
or form into a society, such as a nation, a network of
transnational corporations, or a gated community. 8.
to admit as a member of the body politic, often
accompanied by violence of colonization, conquest,
border patrols, the formation of social distinctions
and hierarchies through the reification of categories
such as race, class, gender, sexuality, ethnicity, and
nationality. 9. to include, though not without
sophisticated processes of selection and exclusion.
Dance Under Construction is an interdisciplinary
graduate student conference on dance, the body, and
performance. The conference will take place in two
distinct venues: a theater and a set of conference
rooms. Drawing from a wide range of research
interests and performance practices, the seventh
annual Dance Under Construction Conference is
currently seeking proposals that address this year=92s
theme: In/corp/orations. We are interested in bodily
inclusions and exclusions through examinations of
mobility and access. We would like to explore the
kinds of limits encountered when and where bodies
circulate. What kinds of criteria are established in
processes of incorporations/ exclusions, and who
determines these values? How do performance practices
challenge or re-enact these values? How do bodies
move in certain spaces, and how do they move into
other spaces, incorporating or appropriating them for
their own uses? How do choreographers incorporate
issues from the current political landscape into their
work? Because we are engaged in the practices and
critical studies of dance, choreography, and
performance, we are interested in how the issues of
circulation, mobility, and selection affect moving
bodies: hyper-technical bodies, hybrid movement
vocabularies, cut-and-paste, cultural grab-bag, and
channel-changing patchwork choreographies. Under what
circumstances do bodies incorporate other cultural
practices? How are membership, citizenship, and
belonging constituted?
Friday=92s program will take place in a theater. There
will be a dress/tech rehearsal on the preceding
Wednesday or Thursday for accepted Friday applicants.
If you would like to apply to present on Friday,
please send in a video with 3-5 min. from your
work/work in progress. Saturday=92s program will occur
in lecture halls. ALL applicants (Friday and
Saturday) need to submit a maximum 500-word abstract
of your paper, performance, or project. Please
include your name, contact information, institutional
affiliation, and indicate all technological and space
requirements. Specify in your application whether a
theater or lecture hall would best suit your work, and
please plan not to exceed a time limit of 20 minutes.
Be prepared to talk about your work and engage with
the work of others. Presenters will be required to
pay the conference registration fee of $20 which
includes access to events on both days, as well as
lunch on Saturday.
