CALL FOR PROPOSALS

New England Women's Studies Association (NEWSA) Annual Conference hosted
by UMass Dartmouth's
Women's Studies Program & Women's Resource Center

PERFORMING ACTIVISM

March 4-5, 2005

How do we define activism? How do we "do" activism? How do
interdisciplinary perspectives engage activism? How is activism relevant
to our communities today? Proposals are welcome connecting activism
and&art, diversity, theory, history, teaching, learning, and community
initiatives. Display tables will also be available.

The conference will run from 1:00pm on Friday, March 4th to Saturday,
March 5th at 3:30pm. Friday night will include a free supper reception
for all conference attendees and the film Two Women, set in Iran which
is part of a film series, Women's Rights, Women's Wrongs: A
Cross-Cultural Women's Film and Discussion Series, developed and
co-sponsored by the UMass Dartmouth Criminal Justice and Women's Studies
Programs.

Proposal Format: Faculty, students, staff, administrators, and community
activists from all disciplines and fields are invited to submit
proposals for individual papers, complete sessions, panels, or round
tables. Poster sessions, performance pieces, video recordings, or other
visual works are also encouraged. For individual papers, submit a
one-page abstract. For complete panels, submit a one-page abstract for
each presentation plus an overview on the relationship among individual
components. For the poster sessions and art work, submit a one-page
overview. All proposals must include speaker's/speakers' name(s),
affiliation(s), and contact information (address, email, & telephone
number).

KEYNOTE SPEAKER
Donna Hughes
Professor & Eleanor M. and Oscar M. Carlson Endowed Chair
Women's Studies, University of Rhode Island

Dr. Hughes is well known for her activist work and scholarship regarding
womens rights. In particular, Dr. Hughes investigates violence, sex
trafficking, sexual exploitation, and women's work to resist violence.
Dr. Hughes has worked with government and other organizations on
policies regarding women's human rights. Her work and activism will
contribute to our discussions on the theme of Performing Activism.

EMBEDDED STUDENT CONFERENCE!
This year's conference will include an embedded student conference, and
we encourage undergraduate and graduate students to submit proposals
that consider the theme Performing Activism. We ask faculty to encourage
their students to get involved and attend the conference.
