SEMINAR: 'Woman and Public Space: Practice and Representation'
This seminar will explore the ways in which spatial practice both shapes
and is shaped by urban landscapes, cultures and identities, with a
specific focus on woman's presence within the production and
representation of public urban space from the late nineteenth century to
the present day. Contributors might consider a range of topics, including
but not limited to: women's presence in and representation of a range of
public sites (streets, caf=E9s, department stores, malls, lobbies,
balconies, galleries, transport systems, amusement spaces, court-rooms
etc); female perceptions and constructions of public space in fiction,
travel narratives, architectural or visual media; concepts of
transitivity, rhythmanalysis, pedestrian poetics and the fl=E2neur/se.
4-page abstracts of proposed papers should be sent by April 6th, 2004 to

The convenors will communicate to the proponents whether their proposal
has been approved no later than 31st May. Please note that participants
will not be allowed to read either their papers or a summary of them, but
are rather expected to summarise orally the main points being made in it,
in no more than 10 minutes and to engage in a discussion with the other
seminar participants and with the audience.
