*Call for Expressions of Interest: New Journal on Civil Society*
*Date Submitted:* 2004-03-05
*Announcement ID:* 137380
We are proposing to launch a new scholarly journal entitled "Civil=20
Society: Journal of the Public Sphere" and would be interested in=20
hearing from individuals interested in contributing in the following ways=
:
* as article authors
* as members of the editorial advisory board
* as contributors of ideas or suggestions
The idea behind the journal is to provide a multi-disciplinary forum in=20
which to discuss the concept and practices of civil society. The topic,=20
while enjoying considerable intellectual attention as of late, tends to=20
be discussed in particular understandings. For example, there are=20
journals devoted to voluntary action, or 'the third sector', and=20
political theory journals carry occasional contributions dealing with=20
the topic. We want to provide a broad canvas, one which will allow these=20
themes to be heard in one place, making the variety of narratives and=20
approaches more intelligible, and allowing for a more holistic treatment=20
of civil society in all its forms.
We are particularly interested in receiving feedback from scholars from=20
the disciplines of political science, international relations,=20
sociology, anthropology, and development studies.
The journal is predicated on the understanding that the concept of civil=20
society is a contested and multifaceted one. Therefore, articles that=20
challenge 'conventional wisdom' or interrogate the underpinnings of the=20
very idea of civil society, from any theoretical=97or indeed=20
cultural=97perspective or tradition are desirable. While voices from=20
practitioners are welcome, it is hoped that all contributions will=20
contain a strong theoretical element.
