*SEX IN HISTORY*
SYMPOSIUM
Friday, 19 November 2004
University of Melbourne
Sponsored by the Melbourne Historical Journal.
The Sex in History Symposium is seeking contributions that explore the
evolution, representation, and social construction of sex, gender,
sexuality and/or related phenomena in history. We are interested in
papers that explore sexual activity in historical context, including,
but not limited to such issues as: the formation of sexual identities
(e.g., different-sex, same-sex, bisexual and queer identities);
sexuality and marriage (premarital, courtship, adultery, divorce-related
themes); individual sexuality (celibacy and masturbation); fertility and
sexuality (menstruation; birth control, abortion, vasectomy and other
technologies); sexual subcultures; geographies of sexuality;
prostitution; sexually transmitted disease; HIV/AIDS and sexuality;
representations of sexuality (e.g., pornography, erotica, safer sex
campaigns); the medicalization of sexualities (e.g., sexology,
psychiatry; perversions and paraphilias); sex education; moral reform
movements; legal regulation of sexuality; sexual violence; globalization
and sexuality; historiographical and theoretical approaches to sexuality
(e.g., marxism, feminism, queer theory). Papers should be no more than
twenty minutes long. /Titles, abstracts of 200 words and a brief CV for
individual papers should be sent to the below address by 30 September
2004./ Offers to organize a panel for the conference are particularly
welcome. Panel proposals (featuring three paper-presentations total)
should include panel title, brief description of panel theme, name of
the panel chair, as well as full details of each of the three papers.
Applicants will be notified by 15 October 2004. It is anticipated that a
publication will arise from the conference papers.
The symposium is organised by the editorial collective of the Melbourne
Historical Journal (MHJ). MHJ is a refereed journal for the publication
of Australian and Aotearoa New Zealand postgraduate work in history. It
does not discriminate against fields and types of history, is open to
new approaches, and aims to present original postgraduate work to a wide
and responsive readership.
