  "Considering Class."

In the 21st century there are hardly any aspect of human existence left
unexplored by postmodern theories of the individual, of hybridity and
identity, of race and ethnicity. Within this range of objects of inquiry
is a discussion of the category of class. Its absence from the discourse
of postmodern society is alarming in a time where post capitalism feeds
on cultural fragmentation, and an oversight that keeps the potentially
collective and hence potentially threatening categories away.

We are currently soliciting contributions for an essay collection on the
function and future of the category and discourse of class in the US. We
are interested in essays addressing issues pertaining to this overall
theme from a variety of disciplines, American studies, history,
philosophy, sociology, women studies, religion, gender studies,
comparative politics, cultural studies, ethnic studies etc.
Papers may address topics such as (but not limited to): Class and

    * economic transnationalization
    * out-sourcing
    * mass-consumption
    * discourse of civic society
    * cultural fragmentation
    * corporate capital
    * (the history of) migrant labor
    * art (visual arts, literature, film etc.)
    * local communities
    * "the end of history"
    * globalization of culture
    * gender

Please send essay proposals (300 - 500 words) and short CV's by
September 1st. Completed first drafts of contributions will be expected
by December 1, 2004. Email submissions preferred in MS Word attachment.
