History teaching in the 21st Century: Council of Europe initiative in
Nicosia, Cyprus, on 10 and 11 June

Strasbourg, 04.06.2004 - Education experts from both Cypriot communities
will take part in a seminar on history teaching at the JW Fulbright Centr=
e
in Nicosia on 10 and 11 June, organised jointly by the Council of Europe=20
and the Cyprus Fulbright Commission. In recent years the Council of Europ=
e has
focused on history teaching reform as a way of encouraging tolerance and
understanding on sensitive issues.

Also participating in the seminar will be speakers from Northern Ireland,
the United States, the Georg Eckert Institute for International Textbook
Research and Euroclio (European Standing Conference of History Teachers'
Associations). They will discuss new approaches to history teaching,
including the preparation of new textbooks and the training of history
teachers. The seminar will also examine the work of the Council of Europe=
=20
in this field.

The seminar also aims to help the Council of Europe to identify key partn=
ers
for future work on history teaching in Cyprus, and areas in which the
Organisation could help both Cypriot communities to develop new courses,
textbooks and approaches to history teaching.
