Dear colleague,
I am pleased to invite you to attend the eighth and final seminar of the
series "Islam and Modernity" organized by the Bilkent University
Seminars on Literature, Culture and Society.
Professors Snjezana Veljacic-Akp=FDnar and Giv Nassiri of the Pacific
School of Religion (Berkeley, CA) will be giving a talk on "Islam and
Buddhism in Discussion with Modernity" on Wednesday, June 9, 2004 at 5
pm, by video-conferencing at the New York on Air room in the FEASS Buildi=
ng.
Snjezana Veljacic-Akp=FDnar is the President of Dharma Realm Buddhist
University (Ukiah, CA) and the Director of the Institute for World
Religions (Berkeley, CA). A graduate of Belgrade University, Prof.
Veljacic-Akp=FDnar has received her Ph.D. in Ottoman Turkish Studies from
Istanbul University, been a post-doctoral scholar at the University of
California, Berkeley and taught in Saudi Arabia. She has lectured and
published widely on Buddhism, Islam, Turkish literature and Ottoman
Turkish influence on Serbo-Croat culture.
Giv Nassiri is a lecturer at the Graduate Theological Union (Berkeley,
CA). Born into a Shi`ite Muslim family in Iran, he converted to the Sufi
perspective and Sunni Islam after extensive study with Sufi masters in
Turkey. A former ARIT fellow, Nassiri has received his Ph.D in Islamic
History from the University of California, Berkeley where he taught
Persian language and literature. His A Descriptive Bibliography of 90
Rare Primary Sufi Manuscripts in Persian found in Turkish Libraries is
forthcoming.
