God is Undead: Post-Secular Notions in Contemporary Literature and =
Theory

In recent years religion has found a way back into the academy. A number =
of books such as Post-Secular Philosophy (Phillip Bond, ed.), A Theology =
of Reading (Alan Jacobs), and, most recently, Love and Good Reasons: =
Postliberal Approaches to Christian Ethics and Literature (Fritz =
Oehlschlaeger) suggest a renewed interest in religious notions in both =
literature and literary theory. Even the Marxist critic Terry Eagleton =
has taken an "Augustinian turn" (Eugene McCarraher) in his latest work =
After Theory. This panel seeks to address questions such as: How does =
religious knowledge (Christian, Jewish, Moslem, etc.) influence / alter =
/ inform the reading of texts? How do contemporary authors tackle =
religious issues in their works? How have critics such as Paul Ricoeur, =
Stanley Hauerwas, Emmanuel Levinas, and others contributed to the =
post-secular debate? Will the debate have a lasting impact on literary =
criticism?

Possible topics may include but are not limited to:

-intersections of literature and theology/religion

-postmodernity vs. post-secularism

-spirituality in contemporary literature

-narrative strategies and religiosity
