CALL FOR PAPERS
WAR AND MELODRAMA
Society for Cinema and Media Studies Conference
March 31 - April 3, 2005
London
This panel asks after the historical and ongoing imbrication of
melodrama and war. How have the "affective rhythms" of melodrama
underscored filmic and televisual representations of war, structured the
appeal to identify with both victimization and heroic agency? How have
melodrama's moralizing claims animated nationalist sentiment, or
authorized pleasure in the spectacle of nationalist violence?
Topics might include but are not limited to: imperialism and the early
cinema; Indian wars and the Hollywood western; the war film in any era;
or television coverage of the conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Please send a completed Standard Abstract Form (available on the SCMS
website: www.cmstudies.org), including 300-400 word proposal, brief bio,
and bibliography of no more than 10 entries, by August 15th to:
