- CALL FOR PAPERS -

BORDERS, BATTLES, AND CULTURAL BONDS:
A Historical and Political Perspective on Gulf Societies

University of Pennsylvania
October 2005

Twenty-five years earlier, in 1980, the outbreak of the Iraq-Iran War
ushered in a period of instability in the Gulf region. The Iran-Iraq War
was a watershed event: It reinforced the significance of frontier politics
and territory, while highlighting the contested nature of modern identity
formation. It is the goal of this conference to analyze these concerns
from a historical and political perspective. This interdisciplinary
conference, which will be held at the University of Pennsylvania in
October 2005, is intended not only to provide a retrospective look at
the Iran-Iraq War, but also to offer a much-needed historical commentary
on the ethnic, territorial, and religious roots of dissent in the
Persian Gulf. We hope to further academic exchanges among scholars
dealing with issues of national building and ethnic/religious conflict
in Gulf communities. Thus, the geographical scope of this conference
will include the entire Gulf region, and the periodization will
cover both the 19th and 20th centuries. We welcome the participation
of U.S. and international scholars alike. Papers presented at the
conference will likely be published as an edited volume.
Abstracts of approx. 500 words are due on 15 August 2004.
