Film and Class Spectatorship

Call for Papers
Society for Cinema and Media Studies Conference 2005
London, March 31-April 3, 2005

This panel will explore the relationship between class and film
spectatorship. Papers might address such questions as: Do certain films
(or even entire film movements) posit a middle-class or a working-class
spectatorial position? What are the theoretical and empirical grounds
for such a claim? Furthermore, how can we trace the relationship between
the class-ed spectatorial position offered by a given film and the
extra-cinematic class dynamics of its historical moment?

Papers may address films from any period or national tradition.
