I. Topics in Turkic Languages: International workshops=20
November 2003- January 2004 at the Swedish Research Institute in Istanbul=
Between November 2003 and January 2004, a series of international worksho=
ps was convened at the Swedish Research Institute in Istanbul by Professo=
r Lars Johanson, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, Germany, Professor =
=C9va =C1gnes Csat=F3, Uppsala University, Sweden, and Professor Nurettin=
Demir, Baskent University, Ankara. The participants at the workshops wer=
e scholars and graduate students working in the field of Turkic languages=
at universities in Turkey (Istanbul: Bosporus University, Istanbul Unive=
rsity, Y=FDld=FDz University, Fatih University; Ankara: Baskent Universit=
y, Hacettepe University, Gazi University; Nigde University) and in other =
countries (Tokyo University, Japan, Osnabr=FCck University, Germany, Univ=
ersity of Michigan, USA, Johannes Gutenberg University, Germany, School o=
f Oriental and African Studies, London, Great Britain, Uppsala University=
, Sweden).
The workshops were held on November 1, November 15, December 20 and Janua=
ry 3. They served as a forum for discussing on-going projects on topics i=
n Turkic languages and varieties and for planning new international co-op=
erations and networks. Graduate students had the opportunity to establish=
contacts with scholars working at other universities. Information on rec=
ent publications was also presented at the meetings. Mehmet =D6lmez infor=
med about his series of publications. Nurettin Demir and Emine Yilmaz pre=
sented a new series including Turkish translations of important works on =
Turkic languages written by non-Turkish scholars.=20

Lars Johanson and =C9va =C1. Csat=F3 were invited to a special celebratio=
n of the 80th anniversary of the Turkish Republic at Baskent University i=
n Ankara. On this occasion lectures were held by the President of the Tur=
kish Language Foundation, Professor Haluk S. Akalin, Professor Nevzat G=F6=
zayd=FDn and =C9va =C1. Csat=F3, who informed about the new distance cour=
ses in Turkish at Uppsala University.
In a following exchange of views, Professor Mustafa Isen of the Ministry =
of Culture, emphasized that the Ministry supports the internationalizatio=
n of research and higher education in Turcological studies and that the s=
eries of workshops held in Istanbul is a very positive initiative in this=
regard.
The organizers and participants thank the director of the Swedish Researc=
h Institute, Professor Karin =C5dahl, for the hospitality. The Auditorium=
of the Institute provided a most convenient setting for the meetings.

The Third International Conference in the series "Open and Closed Society=

Conflict and Dialogue"
The conference took place near Moscow 24th to 28th November 2003, five da=
ys=20
inclusive, with the title: Globalism and Traditionalism as Competing Vect=
ors=20
in the Development of Ethnic Cultures in the Caucasus". It was organized =
by=20
the International Research Institute of Caucasian Peoples which is based =
in=20
Tbilisi, with their Moscow colleagues. Most publications are in Russian, =
including their journal "Adat"

There were scholars from Azerbaijan, Armenia, Great Britain, France,=20
Germany, Georgia, Holland, Iran, Poland, Russian Federation, Syria, the U=
SA=20
and Japan. Participants from the North Caucasian Republics were well=20
represented as were the major religions.
Among the themes which were discussed in three sections and a final plenu=
m:
- The content and social functions of globalism and traditionalism in the=
=20
context of their practical aspects within the cultural space of the=20
Caucasian peoples and their geopolitical surroundings
- Perspectives for dialogue and coexistence between open and closed=20
societies during the rapid expansion of globalism
- The possibilities of regulating military-political, ethnic and religiou=
s=20
conflicts, and in particular the Russian-Chechen conflict.
The three sections in which the above points were discussed were:
1) philosophical and methodological approaches
2) religious and political approaches
3) social-anthropological approaches, while the concluding session discus=
sed=20
in particular the work of Hodj-Ahmed Nukhiev.
More general discussion was focused in the concluding remarks on what cou=
ld=20
be drawn from the debates for their implications in practice and for rese=
arch.
