CFP: Modernism: the Self as the Other (3/31/04; MSA 10/21/04-10/24/04)
Discussion of the "other" appears to assume a binary system in which=20
other is opposed to the term "self," with self understood as accessible=20
and even transparent in a way that the other can never legitimately be. =20
Our panel will complicate this dichotomy by focusing on authors who=20
create accounts of the self which are in some way non-transparent and=20
non-self-present --- not subjects that define themselves as other in=20
relation to the dominant culture so much as subjects that in some way=20
see themselves as other to themselves.
We are seeking papers that engage with these concerns in innovative and=20
provocative ways for a panel proposal we will submit to the Modernist=20
Studies Association 2004 conference in Vancouver, Canada. The overall=20
title of the conference is Other Modernisms/Modernism=E2EUR^(TM)s=20
Others. More information about the conference is available at=20

of our proposal to the MSA is May 3/2004.
