How is cultural difference represented in new media and contempory art?

This conference sets out to provoke a dialogue between art and politics.
It will ask artists, critics and curators to think of the place and
function of art in the contempory world. It will question how artists
can contribute to cultural and technological change. While the debates
on art and cultural difference have been raging for decades, current
circumstances are compelling us to reframe the issues.

Speakers include: Okwui Enwezor (Director, Documenta XI, USA), Lisa
Reihana (Artist, New Zealand), Carlos Cappelan (Artist, Uraguay/Spain),
Kendell Geers (Artist, South Africa), Stefano Boeri (Architect,
Multiplicity, Italy), Simryn Gill (Artist, Australia/Malaysia), Ana
Kokkinos (Filmmaker, Australia), Don Bates (LAB Architecture Studio,
USA/Australia), Eddie Berg (Executive Director, FACT, United Kingdom),
Virginia Perez Ratton (Director, TEOR/eTica, Costa Rica), Ross Gibson
(Research Professor of New Media and Digital Culture, UTS, Australia),
Nikos Papastergiadis (Deputy Director Australian Centre, University of
Melbourne, Australia), and Marina Fokidis (Director, Oxymoron Artspace,
Greece).

Presented by the Australian Centre, University of Melbourne, Media and
Communications Program, University of Melbourne and the Australian
Centre for the Moving Image. This project has been assisted by the
Federal Government through the Australia Council, its arts funding and
advisory body. It is an initiative of the Australia Council's Arts in a
Multicultural Australia policy.
