COURSE OFFERING- Music & Society in Central Asia, Univ. of London, Spring 2004
Please find below the description of a course on music and society in
Central Asia offered during the Spring semester in the Dept. of Music,
Goldsmiths College, University of London.
For the first time, a new ethnomusicological course "Music and Society in Central
Asia" is being launched by Dr. Razia Sultanova, commencing on the 24th February
and taking place every Tuesday. The course will introduce the past and present
social meaning of music of one of the oldest cradles of human civilisation
-the Central Asia. Focusing on six former Soviet republics: Uzbekistan,
Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Kirghizstan, Turkmenistan, and the Caucasian Muslim
republic of Azerbaijan, the course will cover historical developments beginning
from the 19th century, when each royal court (Bukhara, Samarkand, Khiva, Ferghana,
Baku) displayed its own traditional culture, contrasting to the rural culture of
nomads. The course then proceeds to the 20th century with the description of the
Soviet time influences when mass culture was on display and all traditional arts
suffered under the restrictive regime. It was not until the end of the 20th
century when these countries, having gained independence, have brought new
changes in the arts field, facing challenges in recreating their authentic
cultures.
Using her personal collection of video (more than 100 hours) and audio (more
than 200 hours) recordings Dr Razia Sultanova will provide students with
broad base of knowledge and historical overview of the Central Asian music
ranging from different topics such as "Islam and music in Central Asia",
"Gender and music" and "Children and music" to "Instrument making: an
Insight into cultural study on Central Asia" etc.
