Theorizing Methodologies
The 15th Annual Southland Graduate Student Conference
UCLA English Department
Friday, May 21, 2004

Graduate students in literary studies and related fields are invited to
submit papers and/or panels that question the ways in which we approach
literary scholarship. We invite papers on literary/cultural topics that
self-consciously reflect upon their own methodologies, examine the criteria
for effective interdisciplinary dialogue, and consider the implications of
methodology within its larger institutional contexts. We also encourage
graduate students to take previous projects in which they have analyzed
literary/cultural texts and to add a meta-critical discussion of their work
and/or its critical apparatuses. Possible topics include (but are not
limited to):

* the adaptation of literary interpretive methods to other fields
* complementary/contradictory research methodologies
* canonizing canon debates: multiculturalism, periodization, national
boundaries and borders
* what counts as a text
* the place of theory
* critical investment and ventriloquism: who gets to speak for whom
* framing arguments: the academic article as narrative
* criticizing and interpreting academic subjectivity
* academic social relevance: cultural capital and the public sphere
* discourse analysis: how to talk about talking about literature
* the connections between pedagogy and scholarship

Abstracts for 20-minute papers and panel proposals are due by Friday, March
26, 2004. Please paste the abstract (200-300 words) or panel proposal into
the body of an e-mail message and submit to <uclasouthland@yahoo.com>.
Panels should consist of three papers and may include a respondent.
Include
your name(s), contact information, department(s), and institution(s).
Thank
you.
