Graduate students in the Department of Sociology at Binghamton
University are pleased to announce the upcoming "Graduate Student
Conference in Historical Social Science" to be held on April 29 - May 1,
2005 at Binghamton University.
The keynote speech will be delivered by Prof. Giovanni Arrighi,
Professor and Chair of the Department of Sociology at Johns Hopkins
University. He will be speaking on "The Strange Death of the
Globalization Project."
While this conference is intended to bring together a wide range of
graduate students in the general field of historical sociology, students
from other disciplines within the social sciences are also strongly
encouraged to participate. The Conference is designed to provide
opportunities for graduate students from various institutions to
establish contact and share ideas with each other, and create networks
to conduct a large-scale collaborative historically-grounded study.
We would also like to emphasize the global character of our conference.
In this sense, we encourage submissions from students of all historical
periods and/or all parts of the world. We welcome applications for the
proposed panels including, but not limited to:
* Historical / Global capitalism
* Crisis and the politics of the late modern world-system
* Social movements / anti-systemic movements
* The production of knowledge
* Global incarceration
* State regulation, institutions of global governance
* Comparative Hegemonies / Empire
* Multiple modernities and cultural forms of Modernity
* Colonialism and nationalism in Historical perspective
* Food and agriculture systems
* Environmental Studies
* Gender studies
* Urban studies
Students interested in participating should send their title and
abstracts (not exceeding 300 words), as well as scholarly affiliation,
address, fax number and email address, to sgsuconf@binghamton.edu no
later than *February 20, 2005.*
Decisions concerning the acceptance of papers will be made by March 7,
