THE CENTRAL EUROPEAN UNIVERSITY
NATIONALISM STUDIES PROGRAM
announces a
Call for applications for MA, PhD and DSP studies at the Central=20
European University in Budapest.
The deadline for application is January 6, 2005.
For information on the program and the offered grants and financial=20
aid please visit our homepage (http://www.ceu.hu/nation).
With questions regarding the program or the admission process please=20
turn to Szabolcs Pogonyi, the program coordinator (pogonyi@ceu.hu)=20
The Nationalism Studies Program was established at Central European=20
University by the late Ernst Gellner with the goal of promoting the=20
study of nationalism in the post-communist countries of Central and=20
Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. The aim of the program is=20
to engage students in an empirical and theoretical study of issues of=20
nationalism, self-determination, problems of state-formation, ethnic=20
conflict, minority protection and the related theme of globalization.=20
Drawing upon the uniquely supranational milieu of Central European=20
University, it encourages a critical and non-sectarian study of=20
nationalism.
Students are encouraged to engage in an interdisciplinary study of=20
nationalism, a subject that is inherently and fundamentally=20
interdisciplinary. For this reason, the international teaching staff=20
has been assembled to represent a wide range of disciplinary=20
expertise relevant to the study of nationalism including history,=20
social theory, economics, legal studies, sociology, anthropology,=20
international relations and political science. The program offers a=20
wide selection of courses that provide a complex theoretical=20
grounding in problems associated with nationhood and nationalism=20
combined with advanced training in the methodology of applied social=20
science. Additional courses focus on placing problems of nationalism=20
in the context of economic and political transition as well as=20
constitution building in post-1989 Central and Eastern Europe with a=20
comparative outlook on regime transitions outside the region. The=20
Master of Arts degree in Nationalism Studies is registered by the=20
Board of Regents of the University of the State of New York (US) for=20
and on behalf of the New York State Education Department.=20
The faculty of the Nationalism Studies Program includes M=E1ria M.=20
Kov=E1cs, Andr=E1s Kov=E1cs, Michael Miller, Will Kymlicka, Shlomo =
Avineri,=20
Rogers Brubaker, Yael Tamir, Donald Horowitz, Michael Stewart, Erica=20
Benner, Walter Kemp, Selim Deringil, Rainer Baub=F6ck, Marsha=20
Rozenblit, Tibor V=E1rady, Victor Kar=E1dy, Florian Bieber, Zolt=E1n=20
Mikl=F3si, J=FAlia Szalai and Panayote Dimitras.

policy issues in trans-Atlantic (Canada-EU) relations. Applied policy=20
experience will be considered an asset in this case.
- A second visitor will be expected to participate in and identify=20
other European participants for a policy research issue on one of the=20
following topics to be held in late August/early September=20
2005: "Multi-level governance and democracy in Canada and=20
Europe,"; "Multi-lateralism, the EU, and Canada"; or "Sustainable=20
