Call For Conference Papers:
"Capital Cities"
Equinoxes 2005
March 18-19, 2005
The Department of French Studies at Brown University announces its 13th
annual Graduate Conference
We invite graduate students to present 15-minute papers relevant to the
theme of "Capital Cities." As urban centers endowed with powerful
political, economic, cultural, or specifically literary capital, capital
cities have, since Antiquity, fascinated and attracted those who have
come to live as metropolitans. Papers are free to explore the various
aspects and representations of the capital city. We welcome submissions
that treat French and Francophone works, as well as broader cultural or
theoretical issues, from the Middle Ages to the present.
Topics addressed may include, but will not be limited to the following:
- The cosmopolitan capital
- Center and periphery
- The metropolis as refuge
- Literary capitals
- Capitals of the French-speaking world
- Metropolises as sites of resistance
- The capital city as female
- Fl=E2neurs and other cosmopolitans
- Paris, capital of the 19th century
- Visual, cinematic, and dramatic representation of the city
- Marginal capitals
- From one capital to another (Paris-Buenos Aires,
Paris-Londres...)
Papers may be presented in French or English. Please send one-page
abstracts for the conference by January 26, 2005 and address all queries
to Equinoxes@ Brown.edu.
The Spring/Summer 2005 Issue of Equinoxes: A Graduate Journal of French
and Francophone Studies will be devoted in part to the proceedings of
the conference. Those wishing to have their articles considered for
publication in the journal should be prepared to send us their papers by
March 11, 2005 (NB: this is one week before the conference). Articles
should be MLA style and between 2500-3500 words in length. Submissions
should be made electronically by sending an e-mail to
Equinoxes@brown.edu with the author's name, affiliation and contact
information in the body of the message and the text in attachment. No
abstract is necessary for those interested only in publication in the
Equinoxes journal. For Call for Proposals for the Equinoxes journal
