CALL FOR PAPERS
Nostalgia and Cultural Memory
A Conference for Graduate Students
March 11-12, 2005
Department of English, University of Victoria
This conference aims to explore the ways nostalgia and cultural memory
work in literature and broader historical, social and political
discourses. How does nostalgia colour our relationship to the past? What
role does nostalgia play in the establishment of cultural history? How
can we describe the feeling of anti-nostalgia? What motivates our desire
to preserve a cultural memory? We invite proposals for panels or papers
on any aspect of memory and nostalgia as represented, confronted or
engendered by literary narratives or other discourses. Proposed studies
might include, but are not limited to:
temporality and the end of history
nostalgia for the future
the nation and nostalgia
the revision of history
memory and narrative
institutional memory
deconstructionism and nostalgia for the construction
nostalgia and the literary canon
