Postcolonial Studies Journal: Special Issue: "Postcolonial Food"=20
Postcolonial Studies is calling for contributions on the topic of=20
=91Postcolonial Food=92. An early reviewer of Claudia Roden=92s 1968 A Bo=
ok of=20
Middle Eastern Food, described the text as =91a work of cultural=20
anthropology=92. The quote is a little misleading: for Roden not only=20
describes a set of foreign culinary practices, she gives recipes for=20
their recreation. Imagine of Postcolonial Studies saw that as its=20
mission. We have devoted a great deal of time to the critique of=20
representation, but rather less to the possibility of intercultural=20
communication, not to mention learning. By taking postcolonial food as=20
our empirical and conceptual object, we are seeking to investigate=20
alternative ways of thinking through issues of ethnic identity, global=20
communication, interculturality and translatability. This investigation=20
could involve descriptions of the postcolonial thinking either implicit=20
or explicit within the cookery writing of figures like Roden, Ken Hom,=20
Madhu Jaffrey etc. It could enter into empirical analyses of the actual=20
spread of various cuisines throughout the world. It could entail=20
considerations of TV chefs as agents of cultural diffusion,=20
reconsiderations of the metaphor =91consumerism=92, or even general=20
philosophical / political considerations of the issues raised in this=20
call for papers. This special issue of Postcolonial Studies will mainly=20
comprise peer-refereed academic articles. We are, however, also devoting=20
some space to creative writing, creative non-fiction and other artwork=20
on the theme. If you are interested in submitting work in such a format=20
please contact guest editor Paul Magee: paul.magee@canberra.edu.au.=20
Alternatively, please send up to 2-page abstracts or writing samples by=20
*30 April 2004* to Postcolonial Studies at the email address below.=20
Final submissions will be due by 30 June 2004.
