The primary focus of this conference is to explore the power of=20
storytelling in the recuperation of memory, collective identity=20
formation, resistance to globalitarian homogenization, and the presence=20
of oral traditions in literature and the sister arts. All forms of=20
storytelling narrative (oral and written), performative, cinematic,=20
musical, and hybrid as well as methodologies (linguistic, sociological,=20
political, anthropological, etc.) will be considered as long as they=20
relate to the themes explicit and implicit in the title of this conferenc=
e.

Deadline for receipt of abstracts and a concise (1/2 page) narrative cv=20
is *June 30th, 2004*. Late submissions will not be accepted, and we=20
cannot accept papers that are to be published elsewhere. Acceptance of=20
your paper for presentation implies a commitment on your part to=20
register and attend the conference. Notification of acceptance will be=20
sent out by *August 30th, 2004*. We welcome the submission of abstracts=20
for 20-minute presentations plus a 10-minute discussion. Papers will be=20
selected based on the evaluation of an anonymously written abstract.=20
Only one individual and one joint abstract per author or presenting=20
group will be accepted. Send 3 copies of a 600-word abstract as well as=20
a short 200-word summary for publication in the conference program.=20
Include the title of the paper on the abstract but not the author=92s=20
name. A selection of the papers presented will be published in=20
Portuguese and English. Please include a separate cover page with the=20
following:
