Calls for Papers - Panel Proposal for the British International Studies
Association (BISA) Annual Conference (University of Warwick, Coventry,UK
- 20/22 December 2004)
Turkey: Identity and the Politics of (In)Security.
Security is a central concept of theory and praxis of not only
international relations but also domestic relations. Theoretically, the
panel is aimed at challenging the dominant conceptual grammar of
security that treats insecurities as natural facts while problematizing,
and thus focusing attention onto, the role security plays in the conduct
of politics. Empirically, the focus of the panel is on Turkey.
The three basic substantive assumptions unifying the analysis presented
in this panel are: 1) insecurities, rather than being natural facts, are
social and cultural constructions; 2) identity and insecurity are
produced in mutually constitutive processes; 3) security is a political
act in terms of lending to certain policies a priority, defining a
group's core values and privileging certain means of responding to
particular problems.
Papers with varied emphasis on conceptual and empirical issues related
to security and identity construction in Turkey are invited.
All proposals for papers should be submitted before April 27, 2004 to
Wolfango Piccoli (wwp00@aber.ac.uk).
A paper proposal should include:
1. the paper title
2. a short abstract including methodology, main assumptions and
conclusions of the paper (200 words maximum)
3. author name(s) and institutional affiliations
4. author e-mail address(es), telephone and fax
Proposals from PhD students are particularly encouraged.
