Gender and Modernity

The Cultural logic of modernity is not merely that of rationality as expressed
in the activities of calculation and experiment; it is also that of passion,
and the creative dreaming born of longing. Colin Campbell
[Modernism] was unconsciously gendered masculine. Bonnie Kime Scott
Gender and modernity: how do they collide and coexist? Are they separate
entities at all?
The ninth History in the Making Conference will be held on March 6, 2004 at
Concordia University in Montreal, Quebec. The purpose of the HIM conference is
to showcase and workshop the research of graduate students and senior-level
undergraduates. Students from all history-related disciplines are welcome.
Each participant will be required to make a 15-20 minute presentation. Finished
conference papers should be no longer than 15 pp. They will be published in the
conference's annual proceedings.
Possible topics include:
teaching gendered history
intersections of sexual orientation and leadership
the gendered nation
depictions of gender in film, print, or other visual media
technology and sexuality
sexuality and patriotism
premodern conceptions of gender
transgressions of modernity versus transgressions of gender
atypical modernities
...Of course, we welcome most interpretations of the topic.
We encourage creative research and enthusiastic contributions.
Requirements:
<sum> a 500-word abstract of your proposed paper/presentation (as well as your full
name, discipline, level of study, and home/email address) is due by January
6th to conference@historyinthemaking.ca. Please include as inline text or
Microsoft Word attachment.
<sum> requests for AV should follow acceptance and subsequent confirmation of
attendance.
<sum> Submissions and papers may in either English or French.

Le Genre et la modernité : collision et coexistence.
Joignez-vous à nous pour réfléchir à ces questions. La neufième édition de la
conférence 'History in the Making' aura lieu le 6 mars 2004 à l'Université
Concordia, Montréal. Cet événement soulignera la recherche d'étudiants aux
cycles supérieurs ainsi qu’aux troisième et quatrième année du baccalauréat.
Nous favorisons une approche inter-disciplinaire et les étudiants de divers
domaines seront les bienvenus.
La durée de chaque présentation sera d'environ 15 à 20 minutes. Les articles
pour la présentation ne doivent pas excéder 15 pages. Ils seront publiés dans
les déliberations annuelles de la conférence.
Thèmes Proposés :
l’enseignement du genre en histoire
orientation sexual et l’idée de la nation
genre en film et dans la media
sexualité et patriotisme
pre-modernité et genre
transgression de modernité vs. transgression de genre
modernités atypiques
Critères d'admissibilité :
<sum> une proposition n'excédant pas 500 mots, vos coordonnées (nom complet,
discipline, cycles d'études et adresse postale et électronique). Le tout doit
nous parvenir par courriel d'ici le 6 janvier 2004 à l'adresse suivante:
