Call for papers on "Ethnic Studies in the Age of Globalization"
Annual graduate student conference
20 February 2004
Committee on Ethnic Studies, Harvard University
The 2004 graduate student conference in Ethnic Studies invites proposals
for papers related to the general conference theme, "Ethnic Studies in the
Age of Globalization," and to questions like the following: How have large
waves of international migration and travel affected the boundaries, or
formation, of ethnic groups? How have comparative perspectives changed
concepts of race and identity in a global context? How does our
understanding of ethnic relations in the United States change when they are
examined in global contexts?
The conference will feature four invited keynote speakers:
-Sidonie Smith (University of Michigan) on the discourse of human rights;
-Sara Dorow (University of Alberta) on the racialized political economy of
transnational adoption;
-Jocelyne Cesari (University of Aix-en-Provence, France) on the interaction
of religion and identity in the construction of American Muslim identity;
-Mayra Santos-Febres (University of Puerto Rico) on race and gender in the
Spanish Caribbean.
The conference will provide an opportunity for scholars from different
disciplines and interdisciplinary programs to discuss new and ongoing work
on ethnic and racial difference.
Possible topics include (but are not limited to):
-Globalization and human rights
-Pluralism, relativism and the United Nations human rights agenda
