CFP: Middle-Eastern Discourses (3/1/03; RMMLA, 10/9/03-10/11/03)
Special Topic Session: “Discursive Construction of the Middle East since
the Mid-20th Century”
Place: Missoula, Montana
Date: 9-11 October 2003
This panel is being hosted again by the Rocky Mountain Modern Language
Association at the 57th Annual Convention.
This panel addresses discourses and images that have constructed
Western,
particularly American, perceptions of the Middle East since the mid-20th
century. Scholars, through a critical analysis of a variety of texts,
will
illustrate how common representations of the Middle East have persisted
despite cultural, historical, and political changes in the region. This
panel aims to promote critical awareness of the discursive forces
affecting Western perceptions of the Middle East and how these forces
can
help or hinder the understanding of current events involving Western and
Middle-Eastern nations. Please send abstracts (300 words) via email or
regular mail to: Lutfi M. Hussein, Department of English, Arizona State
University, Tempe AZ 85287-0302 (lutfi.hussein@asu.edu). Call for
abstracts deadline: March 1, 2003.
