Call for papers:
Dear colleaugues,
The Department of English at Mohamed I University at Oujda, Morocco,
will
host an interdisciplinary conference on Minorities and minor
literatures.
This conference will seek to stimulate reflection and debate on the
issue of
minority at a time where cultural specificities are more than ever
threatened. Indeed, as borders are more and more tightly sealed to
isolate
the wealthy North from the impoverished South, this latter, however,
remains
or is made to remain a consumption market open not only to food and
technology but above all to cultural products. In the process, whole
civilizations risk being extinct or relegated to the rank of minority by
the
hegemonic temptations of the great power(s). Thus, the fate of the
social,
ethnic, religious and linguistic minorities as well as their different
forms
of expression is the real indication by which we not only gage the
health of
a society but that of humanity as a whole.
Suggested topics might include, but are by no means limited to, the

following:

Minority and critical theory
Re-Presenting minority
Minority, alterity and identity
Minority and postcoloniality
Minority and ethics
Minorities and globalization
Minority and democracy
Gender and minority
Religion and minority
The right to difference

The historic City of Oujda is a medium size city (500.000 people) in the

north east of Morocco, a few miles from the Mediterranean coast, closest

other well known cities are the Historic city of Fez, Oran (Algeria),
and
the Spanish-Occupied Mellila. In January temperatures frequently reach
below
zero (Celsius) at night and snow falls occasionally. The best way to
travel
to the city would be from Europe (especially Paris) as direct flights
are
available daily.
