Women Re-Creating Language and Culture
NEMLA March 2004 Pittsburgh
A commonplace of feminist criticism is that women have to mediate and
translate between the dominant culture and language and their own modes
of seeing and
communicating. As a result women are often adept at negotiating between
competing languages, cultures and meanings.
This panel will examine instances in which women translate and re-create
the
dominant culture by translating and re-creating the language and modes
of
transmission. Papers may examine the process whereby women re-create
language and
culture or may examine the intertextual relationship between canonical
texts
and those re-created by women.
