A glance at the winter issue of Harvard Educational Review: The rise of the
corporate university
Corporate culture and neoliberal values should not dominate higher
education, writes Henry A. Giroux, a professor of education at Pennsylvania
State University. Unbridled commercialization of colleges threatens American
democratic and civic life, he argues.
The corrosive effects are already evident, according to Mr. Giroux. As an
example, he notes that universities funnel a disproportionate share of
resources into the most profitable areas of study. "Hence," he says, "we are
witnessing both a downsizing in the humanities and the increasing refusal on
the part of universities to fund research in services such as public health
that are largely used by people who can't pay for them." Meanwhile, he adds,
the faculty in more profitable disciplines such as biomedicine must deal
with the pressure to pursue marketable research and threats to their
intellectual property rights.
A real discussion of the meaning and purpose of higher education is being
smothered beneath neoliberalism's market-driven discourse, writes Mr.
Giroux. "The problems of higher education must be addressed in the realms of
values and politics," he contends, rather than those of self-interest and
financial gain. "Challenging the encroachment of corporate power is
essential if democracy is to remain a defining principle of education and
everyday life," he argues, and such a challenge requires the dedication of
educators, students, and others.
