Baskent University
Department of American Culture and Literature
Proudly presents...
3rd International Students Conference
7-9 May 2003
CALL FOR PAPERS
Questioning Globalisation through Literary and Cultural Interactions
Globalisation is an issue that has increased in importance through contemporary political, social, and economical changes in the world. These changes - the recent establishment of the EU can be presented as an example, have prompted a shift from classical literary and cultural trends to contemporary postmodern reactions, both negative and positive, in literature and culture.
This conference aims to discuss the issue of globalisation and its meanings, connotations, and consequences from the perspective of young scholars of undergraduate and graduate levels. Proceedings will be published in the Journal of American Studies of Turkey (JAST).
Related issues may include but are not limited to:
Literature and culture as sites of diplomacy
The place and prestige of film and literature awards
Rewriting of literary texts
Adaptations in Film
Globalisation, technology and ecology
The media as a tool for globalisation
Protest poetry and music
The disappearance of local colour in the process of globalisation
Universal versus local approaches to globalisation
Globalisation in the Turkish context
The commodification of cultures and texts
The influence of globalisation on the emergence of youth cultures
Gender studies
Comparative studies
Theoretical approaches to globalisation
Humanities Departments and Globalisation
Artistic and aesthetic expressions
Travel literature
Post-colonialism
Multiculturalism
Intercultural theatre and performance
The papers must reflect personal perspectives and they should present a focused argument even provocative. The time is restricted, though. Please keep the presentations to 15-20 minutes, approximately 1200-1500 words or 4-6 double-spaced pages. Applicants may send their paper proposals to the following e-mail addresses:
amerconference@baskent.edu.tr or
