"Modernity and Modernism in the Mediterranean World"
University of Toronto
Dates: 31 October - 1 November 2003
The conference aims at drawing a map of modernism taking as its centre
not the sites traditionally associated with it – Paris, London, Berlin,
Moscow – but the Mediterranean basin, an area usually relegated to the
periphery of modernist studies. Modernism is often described as a
complex series of cultural responses to the phenomenon of modernization.
The conference is interested in examining the dynamics and the
articulations of that response in a space in which different cultural,
as well as social, political, and religious traditions encounter,
intersect, and superimpose in both violent and peaceful ways, and in
which modernization itself is lived simultaneously and contradictorily
as, among other things, a colonial imposition, a liberating force, the
cause of the collapse of traditional social and cultural practices, the
means of re-asserting cultural and political dominance. We particularly
welcome papers on interdisciplinary topics.
Possible topics include (but are not limited to) the following:
* the relationship between tradition and modernization
* exchanges between European and Arab cultures
* the representation of the Mediterranean world in modernist literature
and the arts
* orientalist modernism
* modernity in the European periphery
* the notion of "Latin culture" (e.g., in the so-called "renaissance
latine")
* travels between the modernist centres and the Mediterranean
peripheries
* modernism and colonialism in the Mediterranean
* modernism and nationalism
* the cultural, theoretical, and historical limitations of the notion of
modernism outside of a European context
To propose a paper, please send a 300 word abstract by e-mail or regular
mail to the organizers.
