SOCIAL SCIENCE RESEARCH COUNCIL
Program on the Middle East & North Africa
2002-2003 International Collaborative Research Grants
Reconceptualizing Public Spheres in the Middle East and North Africa
The SSRC's Program on the Middle East & North Africa (MENA) is pleased to
announce its second annual grant competition supporting international
collaborative research focusing on the MENA region (defined as Iran to
Morocco). We invite proposals that bring together researchers in different
locations to address issues related to the changing nature of public spheres
in the region. The notion of "public spheres" is used in a broad sense, to
cover a range of historical and contemporary aspects of the MENA region.
Topics could include, but are not limited to, the following:
* The transformation of socio-economic conditions, state and non-state
structures, political regimes and conditions of political participation
* The construction of citizenship and other/alternative individual and
collective identities, and their impact on discourses and practices
concerning self, family, community, sexuality, gender and ethnicity.
* The emergence of sites of cultural production and consumption as well as
the creation of new publics through media and information technologies.
Regardless of specific topic, proposals are expected to engage critically
with the literature on public spheres and to assess the relevance of
particular approaches and concepts to the MENA region.
*Please note that proposals focusing on narrowly defined security issues are
not eligible and will be directed to the collaborative research grant
competition of the SSRC's Global Security and Cooperation Program.
Awards: Awards will be for a maximum amount of $35,000 and for a maximum
duration of 18 months, to be undertaken during the period of July 2003
through January 2004.
Eligibility:
* Applicants and all research partners must be holders of a Ph.D degree or
its equivalent.
* Applicants can be of any nationality, from any country and from any
discipline as long as the proposed research is well grounded in social
science theory and methodology.
* The planned collaboration can include as many partners in as many
locations as desired but must include at least two researchers in two
different countries of the MENA region. The research itself can focus on
one
site or many sites in the MENA region, and intra-regional,
cross-regional or
global comparisons are also encouraged.
Application Process: The application process includes two stages: a
preliminary proposal stage and a final proposal stage. A selection committee
will screen the preliminary proposals and choose a small number that will be
eligible for the second stage of the application process. Applicants
selected to advance to the second stage will be invited to a workshop to be
held in early March 2003 in one of the countries of the MENA region. In this
workshop the theme of the program (Reconceptualizing Public Spheres) will be
further elaborated, the concept of collaboration will be discussed and the
specific research proposals commented upon. Guidelines for the final
proposal will be explained. Preliminary proposals will be accepted in
English, Arabic, Farsi, Turkish, and French, however the working language of
the workshop and the final application will be English.
Preliminary proposals and application materials will be accepted on a
rolling basis until the Application Deadline of November 15, 2002. Decisions
concerning preliminary applications will be announced by January 31, 2003.
