Department of Turkish Studies at Universiteit Leiden is holding a =
conference
entitled "Mapping Ideological Landscape of Turkey" on 21-22 June 2002. =
The
Conference is organized to support the project, "Recycling the Past: =
The Use
of Social Memory in the Construction of Modernity in Turkey", executed =
by a
team of researchers, namely Ph.D. students, Umut Azak, Se=E7il Deren, =
and
=D6zg=FCr G=F6kmen, led by Erik-Jan Z=FCrcher, and supervised by a =
committee
consisting of Martin van Bruinessen, Alexander de Groot, and Marcel van =
der
Linden. The project "Recycling the Past" aims at the construction of a
history of ideas for contemporary Turkey (1946-1999) by analysing the =
use of
the historical discourse related to the organisation of state and =
society.
Within the discourse of the organisation of society, a major focus is =
the
unanswered, but nonetheless significant questions in contemporary =
Turkey,
concerning continuity and change in the discourses of the ethnic and
cultural Turkish character of state and society, the nature of Turkish
secularism, and class, populism and popular education in Turkey. =20
