CENTRAL ASIAN STUDIES

Pending approval, the Department of Near Eastern Studies at the University
of Michigan invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professorship
in modern Central Asian studies.  The successful candidate will specialize
in the history or anthropology of Eurasian societies in the modern period
and will teach introductory to upper-level courses on these subjects.  The
candidate is expected to have expertise in modern and current religious and
political movements and conflicts in the area.  He/she will hold a joint
position in the Department of Near Eastern Studies and the Department of
History or the Department of Anthropology, depending on his/her primary
field of specialization.  Preference will be given to candidates with
demonstrated proficiency in at least two languages of the area and
first-hand knowledge of its societies, cultures, archives, and academic
institutions.  Knowledge of Russian and/or Chinese will be an advantage.
