JOB- Humanities Teaching Fellow, Aga Khan Humanities Project, Dushanbe
HUMANITIES TEACHING FELLOW
Civic Education Project / Aga Khan Humanities Project Visiting Faculty Fellow
Location: Dushanbe, Tajikistan
Term: 15 August 2002 - 15 August 2003
Deadline: 25 July 2002
The Civic Education Project (CEP) and the Aga Khan Humanities Project (AKHP)
are seeking a Visiting Faculty Fellow to teach, in the English language,
interdisciplinary humanities courses in Dushanbe, Tajikistan. The position
runs from September 2002 to June 2003, with the possibility of renewal.
The AKHP has developed a multi-year humanities curriculum, which is
currently taught in Russian at nine universities in the Central Asian
republics of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan. The curriculum takes
an international, multi-cultural approach to issues in history, philosophy,
and the fine and performing arts, engaging students in debates within the
humanities through the use of original texts and innovative learning
mechanisms. The first year focuses on the individual within society, the
second year on cultural and cultural transformation, and the third year on
the "fundamental questions" of humanity.
This position would be responsible for teaching an English-language version
of the first- and second-year curriculum using existing materials, and
assisting in the development of the third-year curriculum. The position
will work closely with other instructors in the AKHP, and foreign and local
colleagues in CEP throughout the Central Asian region, on a variety of
faculty and student projects.
The successful candidate will possess a graduate degree in a relevant
discipline from an accredited liberal arts institution, and a minimum of two
years teaching experience at the university level in such an institution.
Such a candidate will have an exemplary foundation in one area of the
humanities, with interdisciplinary capabilities. This individual will be
committed to maintaining an open rapport with students and colleagues, and
fostering innovation in teaching. Overseas experience is necessary,
preferably in teaching. An awareness of regional issues and post-Soviet
higher educational issues would be an asset.
The successful candidate will join two exceptional teams: that of the AKHP,
headquartered in Dushanbe; and that of CEP Central Asia and Mongolia, with
regional offices in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. These organizations share in the
commitment that higher educational reform should foster creative, innovative
thinking and scholarly excellence as a means of promoting pluralism and
tolerance in the region. For further information on the AKHP, go to:
www.akdn.org/humanities/Humanity.htm; for further information on CEP, go to
www.cep.org.hu.
Application packages are available online at www.cep.org.hu. Applications
must be received by CEP no later than 25 July 2002.
The AKHP is a project of the Aga Khan Trust for Culture, Geneva. The AKHP
aims to strengthen the study of humanities in the education systems of
Central Asia. The goal of the AKHP is to develop skills of cultural
interpretation, independent thinking, reasoned debate, and open-ended
curiosity. The AKHP also promotes tolerance for pluralism in ideas,
cultures, and peoples, and develops a capacity for ethical reflection and
aesthetic appreciation.
