POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT

Research Fellows for Central Asian Studies Unit at the IIS

The Central Asian Studies Unit of The Institute of Ismaili Studies is 
recruiting two research fellows for the autumn of 2002, for a two-year 
period.  The Fellows will be involved in the research and educational 
activities in and around the Central Asian Ismaili Communities. The 
assignments for this post entail extensive travel, particularly to Central 
Asia. The research Fellows will report to the Coordinator of the Central 
Asian Studies Unit. 

The applicants must meet the following criteria:
 * Have a PhD or Master's degree in social sciences, preferably Islamic 
   Studies, Anthropology, Sociology, Political Science, Law, International 
   development, or Education.
 * Knowledge of research methodology and experience of conducting research 
   in a Central Asian country (this includes Tajikistan, Kyrgizstan, Northern 
   Pakistan, Afghanistan, Eastern Iran and Western China). Samples of 
   scholarly work and research will need to be submitted with the application.
 * A minimum of two year's working experience in a Central Asian country, 
   and knowledge of one or more Central Asian languages (preference will be 
   given to Farsi, Dari, Tajiki, Shognani, Brusheski, Chitrali and Russian). 
   Applicants will also need to have an excellent command of English and 
   computer skills.
 * Excellent communication skills, ability to be a team player, and an 
   awareness of the issues of development in Muslim societies.
