Founded in 1919, AUC moved to a new 270-acre state-of-the-art campus in
New Cairo in 2008. The University also operates in its historic
downtown facilities, offering cultural events, graduate classes, and
continuing education. Student housing is available in both downtown
Zamalek and New Cairo. Among the premier universities in the region,
AUC is Middle States accredited; its Engineering programs are
accredited by ABET and the Management program is accredited by AACSB.
AUC is an English-medium institution; eighty-five percent of the
students are Egyptian and the rest include students from nearly ninety
countries, principally from the Middle East, Africa and North America.
Faculty salary and rank are based on qualifications and professional
experience. All faculty receive generous benefits, from AUC tuition to
access to research funding; expatriate faculty also receive relocation
benefits including housing, annual home leave, and tuition assistance

      <b>Job Description:</b><br>
      <br>
The Sociology Program, SAPE Department, at the American University in
Cairo invites applications for an open rank tenure track position to
begin September 2011. The Department is seeking candidates with a
strong background in sociological theory and research methodology and
methods (expertise in participatory action research is considered a
plus), and a specialization in one or more of the following areas:
development and civil society (including community development),
political sociology, social movements and public sphere participation
(including youth as well as other groups), gender, family,
stratification, population and health and/or medical sociology.
Knowledge of the Arab world/Middle East is considered a plus.<br>
      <br>
      <b>Requirements:</b><br>
      <br>
PhD in Sociology is required at time of appointment. Teaching
experience is preferred. Successful candidates should have an ongoing
program of research and publication and a demonstrated commitment to
excellence in teaching. Responsibilities include undergraduate as well
as graduate teaching in a joint Sociology-Anthropology MA program, an
active program of research and publications, and service to the
Department and the University.<br>

Informational interviews will be held at the American Sociological
Association's (ASA) Annual Meeting in August 2010 and the Middle East
Studies Association's (MESA) Annual Meeting in November 2010; however,
all candidates will be given full consideration. Short-listed
candidates will be interviewed by video-conference in December
2010/early January 2011..<br>
